Ok so how does that go together? Well you have to be here to experience it but today was a volunteer day for me. The local Amateur Radio club volunteers to run the gates for the Pawnee Steam show every year and this year, since I am retired, I had volunteered to help. I did this same thing 2 years ago and had a great time , although it was a lot of work. Today I had to get up way too damn early (about 5:30AM) to so I could be in Pawnee by 7AM… The gates open at 8AM and we have to have breakfast and a briefing before we get started. As opposed to the previous year we had several extra people working the gates so it sure helped… My last time it was two of us on the north gate and the line was 300 yards long before we got a little help… Today is a normally slower day and tomorrow will be the big rush but if we have the same crews show up it will work out fine.
First thing today I took a back road north, which takes me by the Tumbleweed… This is the big weekend for the Calf fry… This was Friday morning going by the parking… it is so big they park in all the free fields as far as 1/2 mile away … not it is a big deal here…
I guess there were a lot of folks that couldn’t drive home or got rides… in the distant there is even a campout…
I know it is blurred and I didn’t see it till later… tents in next to those trees… and this evening there were people back there.
It was also a bit cool this morning as you can see by the steam off the ponds.
But my focus was to get to Pawnee and the
Here is the crew and our banner as volunteers for the gate check in… it is early but we had people waiting to get in at 8AM… and the crowd was pretty steady most of the day coming and going.
These were not part of the show but they did come by along with maybe 5 other classic cars on a run…
The show had several antique cars, trucks along with more old tractors and stuff than you can imagine…
One of my duties was to hold the gate open for the passing tractor on his way to a plowing demonstration…
Got a video of that as well
There was a group of Bike riders that came to the show and one guy had just gotten his finish… a bit out of my range as he said it had cost him $70,000? sure hope I didn’t mis-understand ??
I left the show at about 2:30 as we had planned for another engagement this evening but when I got home Sherrie had not been feeling good all afternoon so I sat down and promptly took a nap… When I woke form that I asked if we were still going to the Foundation function and that seemed to be out but an alternative was the free music at the OSU Botanical Gardens… they have started to run free music on 3 Fridays in September and now they have decided to try them in May… and it was pretty good …They have a list of things they are doing along with the music evenings…
The group tonight was Rhythm and Blues and a lot of stuff form the 70’s… not bad…
That pretty much ended the evening of another great day… which I finished off with a glass of wine after supper waiting on the grandkids to get here.
