Got around a bit earlier today, not much ;), but made it out to breakfast and then on to Leadville. Had my heart set on eating at “Matilda’s” in Leadville. First time I went there was back in 1974/75. It is an orange house east on 4th street but alas, when we get there it did not look like any activity had been in the parking for days… door locked… blinds pulled… Last time we were there (last year) one of the girls working said something about Grandma and we just assume she finally retired.
We looked around Leadville to see if things had changed and it appeared that the summer activity was slower than usual and a lot of the stores were closed (some for the day as they still had merchandise?) Anyway it was not as busy as the last time we were there… We made a trip down the other way on 4th street to the “house with the eye”

For some years it had been a museum and has a plaque on the outside that says it is on the list of historical sites but it too was closed and looked “unused” for some time?

We also found this unique house:
The top deck has a hot-tub!… what a view while relaxing that would be.”]

In our sight-seeing drive I found that what appears to be at least 1/2 of the town is for sale and would suspect that a lot more is if one asked? Seems to also be a lot of Artists up there… saw this at one of the “closed” art shops:
Look close it is a face…..

After making the town (seeing what we wanted to) we had decided to try a Mexican restaurant down on Elm but alas it is not open on Tuesday…? What is it up here… ? from the activities list I see they had a mountain bicycle rally last weekend, and one next weekend so maybe everyone is resting during the week?
Anyway we spotted a place on the back street called Casa Blanca...

Casa Blanca dining

according to the menu it has been a tradition for 34 years? Guess I had always been locked in on Matilda’s and not seen this one before…
Anyway we decided to try it and I found they also have “homemade” green Chile… so I had some. It was better than the one in Raton. I am not sure it was as good as Matilda used to make but it is hard to find homemade anymore… I did a little review of Casa Blanca while writing this and find there are a few comments on the Yahoo travel pages – a couple of reviewers said it did not compare to the Grill. I can make no comparison as the Grill was closed and does not open until 4 (according to the sign) so it is out for lunch. Also to me it sounded like a bar and music place for night type activity so in reality you can’t compare a family run business that is there to server food not entertain? Just my thoughts… I like these out-of-the-way family dining places as you get home-made stuff not assembly line dining. Anyway our meals were good, the service was a little slow but they have limited “family” helping in the front to keep the cost competitive and no matter what the travelers think… it has received the “locals” top spot for 3 years in the past 4? certificates are on the wall… I do not know how that is voted on but it looks good.

After lunch we turned back south for another fine afternoon nap… 🙂 on the way though this place caught my eye and we had to get a picture…
House, Office, retreat? you call it? it has windows on the sides but is narrow?”]

it is located just south of Granite Colorado on the other side of the river from the highway…?

Enjoyed the day, tomorrow? it will happen when it happens.
