Motorhome Awnings – 2 Critical Choices in Choosing a Motorhome Awning

Now that I am home and it is damn cold (we spent the last week in 80+temps) I am thinking about the motorhome and a trip in the spring.  So I found this article and seems like good “food for thought”.  – WD0AJG

Motorhome awnings are one of the best and most effective ways to increase the amount of living space with your motorhome, caravan or rv. Awnings for your motorhome fall into two broad categories-the canopy type and the drive away model for your motorhome.

Drive Away Awning

The drive away awning is simply an awning that is independent of your motor home and is self supporting. It is very useful for putting wet clothes, buckets and spades, dirty boots etc. after a good day’s activity on holidays. It is ideal also for storing bicycles and surf boards etc. and will obviously provide protection for your motorhome door and porch area from the most inclement weather.

You can attach your drive away awning to your motorhome awning rail but you can leave it behind for the day as you travel as it is self supporting.

When choosing your awning, whether driveaway or a canopy type, you will have to decide on a few critical factors such as whether you need a ground sheet, the fabric of your cover and the type of poles you will use to support it.

Canopy Motorhome Awning

A canopy motorhome awning offers you the choice of getting a permanent or temporary awning. The permanent will be fixed to the side of your motorhome and attached to the awning rail; you simply roll it out and support it with a couple of awning poles. The top end canopy awnings offer you additional awning accessories such as fabric walls that you can fit to it.

These are the two main types of awnings for your motor home that will be available to you-you might also consider how you will fix your awning to the hardstanding that still exists on some camp sites. If you are faced with this problem you might use steel rock pegs but most camp sites now have a surface that won’t present you with this problem.
