Today we made the drive to see Dad, take care of a little business and then make a drive to spots we had not been before.
In my work to scan and save all of the old family photos I had come across several that were from my grandmothers collection. They showed a place with a mill in the background, a rock dam, a small pond and a lot of fish?
Dad seemed to think that it was at a place called Jefferson , OK… It shows on the maps but I suspected it would be very small…
I looked all over and finally asked the people at the elevator and they said the mill behind the elevator had been there since back in the late 1800’s so it is possible? Somehow it does not look exactly right but the story is that they had to totally change the channel after the last big flood in about 1994 and now the stream runs off to the south before it gets to town? then into the Rock Island park?
You can see in the current Google earth that there was a drainage that went through town? but to be as big as the pictures say???
It was evident that the building on the front and far left is older than the one in the back… even the read clay block on the right is newer than the one on the left???
I am still not sure this is the same as in the picture but feel it had to be in this area? and according to the people here this mill was in operation over 100 years and no other is known up there?
Probably need a lot more research if I was to be fore sure and we only had a little time to drive through…
